Module 12 Vocabulary Terms

Module 12 (Week 4) Vocabulary 1.) Morphemic Analysis - "the process of analyzing or breaking down a word in terms of its meaning units or morphemes" ( Words Their Ways ) Morphemic analyis helps students learn differnt technigues when it comes to identifying the new words meaning.   2.) Etymology - "the study of the origin and historical development of words" ( Words Their Ways ) Etymology helps students gain a better understanding of where words come from and what they have developed in to. This helps students gain a better understanding  of the meaning of the word.  3.) Stem - "a base or word rood together with any derivation affixes that have been added, and to which inflectional endings may be added" ( Words Their Ways ) Stem is a very important word to teach studnets when it comes to literacy because these are typically the words students already know and are familiar with.  4.) Module 11 Vocabulary Terms

Module 11 (Week 4) Vocabulary 1.) Affixes - "most commonly a suffix or prefix attached to a base word, stem, or root" ( Words Their Ways ) Teaching afixes within literacy teaching is important because helps determine unknown words meanings. 2.) Academic Vocabulary - "domain-specific vocabulary found in content areas, specialized, disciplinary texts as well as general vocabulary used across content areas" ( Words Their Ways )   Academic Vocabulary are very important because this helps students learn important content specific terms that will help them analysis the given terms/ 3.) Inflectional Endings - "suffixes that change the verb tense or number of a word" ( Words Their Ways )   Inflectional endinggs are important when it coems to literacy learning because they help identify differnt verb forms of a given word. 4.) Syllable Juncture - "the transition from one syllable to the next" ( Words Their Ways )

Module 10 (Week 4) Vocabulary 1.) Word Consciousness - "an attitude of curiosity and attention to words critical for vocabulary development" ( Words Their Ways ) Word Consciousness is important when it comes to teaching literacy because this allows students the time to fully develop and greater understanding of words ad their meanings. 2.) Diphthongs - "a complex speech sound beginning with one vowel sound and moving to another within the same syllables" ( Words Their Ways ) Diphthongs are important to learn when learning literacy because they can be sometimes tricky for students to understand. When certain vowels are put together, they can cause a change in sound. 3.) Module 9 (Week 3) Vocabulary 1.) Sight Words - "printed words stored in memory by the reader that can be read immediately without having to use decoding strategies" ( Words Their Way ) Sight words are important to literacy because these are the words that are most frequently used in text and often do not follow any English rules. Knowing sight words has an impact on vocabulary, comprehension and decoding skills. 2.) Schwa -"a vowel sound in English that often occurs in an unstressed syllable"( Words Their Way ) Having an understanding of schwa helps learners understand decoding skills because some sounds in the english language are stressed and unstressed. 3.) Spelling Inventory - "assessments that ask students to spell a series of increasingly difficult words used to determine what features students know or use but confuse, as well as a specific developmental stage of spelling" ( Words Their Way ) Spelling Inventories are important to teaching phonics because it offers adequate feedback on how the student uses phonemic awareness skills when they are asked to spell different words. 2.) Static Reversal -"a handwriting error that is the mirror image of the intended letter"( Words Their Way ) Static reversal can effect many beginner spellers because so letters look similar but are typically reversed.
