Module 7 (Week 3) Vocabulary

1.) Spelling Inventory


- "assessments that ask students to spell a series of increasingly difficult words used to determine what features students know or use but confuse, as well as a specific developmental stage of spelling" (Words Their Way)

Spelling Inventories are important to teaching phonics because it offers adequate feedback on how the student uses phonemic awareness skills when they are asked to spell different words.

2.) Static Reversal

-"a handwriting error that is the mirror image of the intended letter"(Words Their Way)

Static reversal can effect many beginner spellers because so letters look similar but are typically reversed. The teacher should offer resources including how to properly write each letter.

3.) Kinetic Reversal

When it comes to kinetic reversal, they can have an impact when students are learning literacy. Students can mix up the letters and letter direction while spelling.


4.) Feature Guide

-"a tool used to classify students' errors within a hierarchy of orthographic features"(Words Their Way)

Feature Guide is used when assessing students with the spelling inventory and helps classify errors during specific stragies for learning.

Module 12 Vocabulary Terms

Module 12 (Week 4) Vocabulary 1.) Morphemic Analysis - "the process of analyzing or breaking down a word in terms of its meaning units or morphemes" ( Words Their Ways ) Morphemic analyis helps students learn differnt technigues when it comes to identifying the new words meaning.   2.) Etymology - "the study of the origin and historical development of words" ( Words Their Ways ) Etymology helps students gain a better understanding of where words come from and what they have developed in to. This helps students gain a better understanding  of the meaning of the word.  3.) Stem - "a base or word rood together with any derivation affixes that have been added, and to which inflectional endings may be added" ( Words Their Ways ) Stem is a very important word to teach studnets when it comes to literacy because these are typically the words students already know and are familiar with.  4.) Free Morpheme - "meaning units
