1.) Spelling Inventory

Spelling Inventories are important to teaching phonics because it offers adequate feedback on how the student uses phonemic awareness skills when they are asked to spell different words.

2.) Static Reversal

-"a handwriting error that is the mirror image of the intended letter"(Words Their Way)

Static reversal can effect many beginner spellers because so letters look similar but are typically reversed. The teacher should offer resources including how to properly write each letter.

3.) Kinetic Reversal

When it comes to kinetic reversal, they can have an impact when students are learning literacy. Students can mix up the letters and letter direction while spelling.

4.) Feature Guide

Feature Guide is used when assessing students with the spelling inventory and helps classify errors during specific stragies for learning.

Module 4 Vocabulary Terms

Module 4 (Week 2) Vocabulary 1.) Phonemic Awareness - " the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words." (readingrockets.org ) Since phonemic awareness is the awareness that sounds of language creates words. This is one of the fundamental learning skills of literacy. If a student is able to sound out the different letters in a word with different techniques then they are able to learn a word. 2.)Concepts of Print - "understandings about how books are organized, how print is oriented on the page, and features of print such as punctuation and capitalization " ( Words Their Way ) This is important to teaching literacy because this offers students the basic understanding of how to begin reading a text and where to find specific content and concepts with a text. 3.) Module 6 (Week 2) Vocabulary 1.) Invented Spelling - "allows students to write even before they can read during the emergent stage" ( Words Their Way) Invented spelling offers creativity within the literacy classroom by allowing students to attempt to communicate with the letters and sounds that they are already familiar with. This also allows teachers to identify struggling students who are not familiar with letter-sound recognition. 2.) Word Walls -"a collection of words which are displayed in large visible letters on a wall, bulletin board, or other display surface in a classroom"(readingrockets.com) Word walls within the literacy classroom are essential because this teaches students new vocabulary and offers them a wide variety of new words that they are able to see daily around the classroom. Pretend Reading - "a paragraph or spontaneous retelling told by students as they turn the pages of a familiar story book" ( Words Their Way ) Pretend reading helps with literacy learning by teaching students to explore a books content with the student exploring the text. 2.) Memory Reading -"an accurate recitation of text accomplished by fingerpoint reading"( Words Their Way ) Memory Reading helps teach students beginning reading strategies including pointing to words and reading the book from left to right. 3.) Language Experience Approach -" an approach to teaching reading, in which students dictate to a teacher, who records their language"( Words Their Way ) The language experience approach helps students explore literacy by having the student state orally what they had tried to spell on the paper. 4.)
