Module 11 (Week 4) Vocabulary

1.) Affixes

- "most commonly a suffix or prefix attached to a base word, stem, or root" (Words Their Ways)

Teaching afixes within literacy teaching is important because helps determine unknown words meanings.


2.) Academic Vocabulary

- "domain-specific vocabulary found in content areas, specialized, disciplinary texts as well as general vocabulary used across content areas" (Words Their Ways)

  Academic Vocabulary are very important because this helps students learn important content specific terms that will help them analysis the given terms/

3.) Inflectional Endings

- "suffixes that change the verb tense or number of a word" (Words Their Ways)

  Inflectional endinggs are important when it coems to literacy learning because they help identify differnt verb forms of a given word.

4.) Syllable Juncture

- "the transition from one syllable to the next" (Words Their Ways)

  Syllable Juncture are important for literacy because syllables play an important role in language and helps gain a better understanding of phonics.

5.) Domain Specific Vocabulary

- "domain-specific vocabulary found in content areas, specialized, disciplinary texts" (Words Their Ways)

  Domain specific vocabulary is very important vocabulary terms to teach students because these are the same terms that are contained within the common core.

6.) General Academic Vocabulary

- " vocabulary used across content areas and disciplines" (Words Their Ways)

Genreal academic vocabulary is important to teach students because these terms are used across all types of content areas and when students are able to gain more vocabulary terms then there shows to be a reading comprehension score.
 

7.) Accented Syllables

- "the syllable in a word that receives more emphasis when spoken and usually has a clearly pronounced vowel sound" (Words Their Ways)

Accented syllables are important for literacy because syllables play an important role in language and helps gain a better understanding of phonics.

8.) Unaccented Final Syllables

- "the syllable in a word that gets little emphasis and may have an indistinct vowel sound" (Words Their Ways)

Unaccented final syllables are important because these types of syllables create a new sound on the end of words.

Module 9 (Week 3) Vocabulary 1.) Sight Words - "printed words stored in memory by the reader that can be read immediately without having to use decoding strategies" ( Words Their Way ) Sight words are important to literacy because these are the words that are most frequently used in text and often do not follow any English rules. Knowing sight words has an impact on vocabulary, comprehension and decoding skills. 2.) Schwa -"a vowel sound in English that often occurs in an unstressed syllable"( Words Their Way ) Having an understanding of schwa helps learners understand decoding skills because some sounds in the english language are stressed and unstressed. 3.)
